7-Day Machame Route Trek – Kilimanjaro Climb

7 Days

/ Adult

Take on one of Africa's most rewarding adventures with this 7-day Machame Route trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is popular for its dramatic scenery, varied landscapes, and opportunities to support acclimatization through the mountain's changing elevations.

Your journey begins in the lush rainforest before continuing across moorland, rocky ridges, and alpine desert. Along the way, enjoy views of iconic landmarks such as the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and the glaciers near the summit.

With experienced mountain guides and a dedicated support crew, you will trek at a steady pace toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The route is physically demanding, and although its itinerary offers opportunities for acclimatization, reaching the summit is never guaranteed.

After breakfast, travel to Machame Gate for registration and the start of your Kilimanjaro climb. Enter the rainforest and follow forest trails surrounded by dense vegetation, moss-covered trees, and birdlife.

Continue steadily uphill until you reach Machame Camp, where your crew will prepare your mountain camp and dinner.

Trekking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Elevation: Machame Gate, approximately 1,800 m; Machame Camp, approximately 3,000 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Mountain camp

Leave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs into open moorland. Enjoy expansive views of the surrounding landscape and, when weather permits, views toward Kibo Peak.

Continue toward the Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic landscape that offers a striking contrast to the forest below.

Trekking time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Elevation: Machame Camp, approximately 3,000 m; Shira Cave Camp, approximately 3,750 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Mountain camp

Today's trek takes you higher into the alpine desert. Walk toward Lava Tower, approximately 4,630 m, where you will stop for lunch and a rest, subject to conditions.

The route then descends toward Barranco Camp, following the acclimatization principle of climbing high and sleeping lower. This is an important stage for adapting to altitude, although it does not remove the risk of altitude sickness.

Trekking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Elevation: Shira Cave Camp, approximately 3,750 m; Lava Tower, approximately 4,630 m; Barranco Camp, approximately 3,960 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Mountain camp

Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical section that requires careful footing and following your guide's instructions.

Continue across ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp. Enjoy the mountain scenery and take time to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the higher elevations ahead.

Trekking time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Elevation: Barranco Camp, approximately 3,960 m; Karanga Camp, approximately 4,035 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Mountain camp

After breakfast, continue ascending through the alpine desert toward Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and exposed as you gain altitude.

Arrive at camp, enjoy an early dinner, and rest as much as possible. Your guide will review the summit plan and help you prepare warm clothing, a headlamp, water, and essential equipment.

Trekking time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Elevation: Karanga Camp, approximately 4,035 m; Barafu Camp, approximately 4,673 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Mountain camp

Begin your summit attempt around midnight, ascending slowly toward Stella Point on the crater rim. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, if your health, weather, and trail conditions allow.

Celebrate your achievement and take photographs before beginning the descent. Return toward Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp.

This is a demanding day involving a long ascent and descent, so follow your guide's instructions and report any symptoms of altitude sickness immediately.

Trekking time: Approximately 10–14 hours or longer
Elevation: Barafu Camp, approximately 4,673 m; Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m; Mweka Camp, approximately 3,100 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, according to the operator's summit-day meal plan
Accommodation: Mountain camp
