6-Day Marangu Route Trek – Kilimanjaro Climb

Discover the beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro on the 6-Day Marangu Route trek, one of the mountain's classic climbing routes. Often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeastern side and is known for its established trail and overnight hut accommodation.

The journey takes you through lush rainforest, open moorland, and the alpine desert before reaching the challenging summit slopes. Along the way, enjoy scenic views of the mountain and surrounding landscapes while your experienced guides support you throughout the climb.

Unlike routes that use tents, Marangu provides overnight stays in designated mountain huts. The six-day itinerary includes an additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, giving you more time to adjust to altitude than the shorter five-day version. However, altitude sickness remains a risk, and reaching Uhuru Peak is never guaranteed.

After breakfast, travel to Marangu Gate for registration and the start of your Kilimanjaro trek. Enter the lush rainforest and follow a well-established trail through dense vegetation, with opportunities to spot birds and other wildlife.

Continue gradually uphill until you reach Mandara Hut, where you can rest and enjoy dinner with your fellow climbers.

Trekking time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Elevation: Marangu Gate, approximately 1,870 m; Mandara Hut, approximately 2,720 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Mandara Hut

After breakfast, leave the rainforest and continue into open moorland. The scenery becomes more expansive, with views of distinctive high-altitude plants and, when the weather is clear, Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Arrive at Horombo Hut, where you will spend the next two nights. Rest, hydrate, and allow your body to begin adapting to the increasing altitude.

Trekking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Elevation: Mandara Hut, approximately 2,720 m; Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Spend an additional day at Horombo Hut to support acclimatization. Depending on your guide's advice, weather, and your condition, you may take a short acclimatization walk toward the Zebra Rocks area before returning to the hut.

This is an important opportunity to rest, drink enough water, and prepare for the higher elevations ahead. An acclimatization day can help, but it does not eliminate the risk of altitude sickness.

Activities: Acclimatization walk and rest
Trekking time: Approximately 2–4 hours, depending on the chosen walk
Elevation: Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m, with a possible higher walk
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Continue toward Kibo Hut, crossing the broad alpine saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape becomes drier and more exposed as you move through the high-altitude desert.

Arrive at Kibo Hut, have an early dinner, and rest before the summit attempt. Your guide will review the plan and help you prepare your warm clothing, headlamp, water, and essential equipment.

Trekking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Elevation: Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m; Kibo Hut, approximately 4,700 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Kibo Hut

Begin the summit attempt around midnight, ascending slowly toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim. Continue along the rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters if your health, weather, and trail conditions allow.

Celebrate your achievement at the summit before beginning the long descent. Return to Kibo Hut for a brief rest and refreshments, then continue to Horombo Hut for an overnight stay.

This is the most demanding day of the climb, with a long ascent and descent at high altitude. Follow your guide's instructions and report any symptoms of altitude sickness immediately.

Trekking time: Approximately 10–15 hours or longer
Elevation: Kibo Hut, approximately 4,700 m; Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m; Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, according to the operator's summit-day meal plan
Accommodation: Horombo Hut

After breakfast, descend through the moorland and rainforest toward Mandara Hut, where you can take a short rest. Continue to Marangu Gate and complete the park exit formalities.

If you reach the designated summit point, you may receive a summit certificate. Meet your driver for the transfer to Moshi or Arusha and celebrate the completion of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Trekking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Elevation: Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m; Marangu Gate, approximately 1,870 m
Meals: Breakfast and lunch, depending on the operator's arrangement
