7-Day Rongai Route Trek – Kilimanjaro Climb

/ Adult

Discover the beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro on this 7-day Rongai Route trek, a memorable journey to the summit of Africa's highest mountain at 5,895 meters. Approaching from the northern side near the Kenyan border, the Rongai Route offers a different perspective of Kilimanjaro, with open landscapes, beautiful mountain scenery, and a generally quieter trail on the ascent.

This itinerary combines gradual trekking, overnight mountain camps, and a challenging summit attempt. Along the way, experience changing environments, from forested slopes to alpine desert and the dramatic volcanic landscape near the summit.

With experienced mountain guides and a dedicated support crew, you will have assistance throughout the climb. The additional time compared with shorter Rongai itineraries can help support acclimatization, although altitude sickness remains a risk and reaching Uhuru Peak is never guaranteed.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Meet your mountain guide for a trek briefing, equipment inspection, and review of the route, safety procedures, and summit plan.

Activities: Airport transfer, trek briefing, and equipment check
Meals: Dinner, depending on arrival time and hotel plan
Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi or Arusha

After breakfast, travel to the Rongai Gate near the northern border of Kilimanjaro National Park. Complete registration before beginning your trek through forested terrain and open mountain landscapes.

Walk at a steady pace while enjoying the peaceful surroundings and looking for birds and other wildlife where present. Arrive at Simba Camp and settle in for your first night on the mountain.

Trekking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Elevation: Rongai Gate, approximately 1,950 m; Simba Camp, approximately 2,625 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Mountain camp

Continue ascending through open moorland with views across the northern slopes. The terrain gradually becomes more exposed as you gain elevation.

Reach Second Cave Camp, where you can rest, enjoy a warm meal, and prepare for the next stage of the climb. Your guide will monitor your condition and encourage a comfortable walking pace.

Trekking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Elevation: Simba Camp, approximately 2,625 m; Second Cave Camp, approximately 3,450 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Mountain camp

After breakfast, continue toward the higher moorland and rugged landscapes of Kilimanjaro's northern side. The route becomes more open, with expansive views across the surrounding plains on clear days.

Arrive at Kikelewa Camp and relax while your crew prepares dinner. Take time to hydrate and rest as your body adjusts to the increasing altitude.

Trekking time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Elevation: Second Cave Camp, approximately 3,450 m; Kikelewa Camp, approximately 3,600 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Mountain camp

Today's trek climbs toward the dramatic rocky landscape beneath Mawenzi Peak, one of Kilimanjaro's striking volcanic summits. The trail becomes steeper in sections, and the scenery transitions into high-altitude alpine terrain.

Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the rugged Mawenzi peaks. Spend the afternoon resting and enjoying the mountain views, weather permitting.

Trekking time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Elevation: Kikelewa Camp, approximately 3,600 m; Mawenzi Tarn Camp, approximately 4,330 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Mountain camp

Leave Mawenzi Tarn and cross the high-altitude saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape is exposed and relatively barren, creating a dramatic sense of the mountain's scale.

Continue toward Kibo Hut, your staging point for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, rest and prepare your warm clothing, headlamp, water, and essential equipment for the night climb.

Trekking time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Elevation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp, approximately 4,330 m; Kibo Hut, approximately 4,700 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Mountain hut or designated camp, according to the operator's arrangement

Begin the summit attempt around midnight, following your guide toward Gilman's Point or Stella Point, depending on the route and conditions. Continue toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters if your health, weather, and trail conditions allow.

After celebrating and taking photographs, begin the descent. A standard Rongai itinerary normally continues down toward Horombo Hut for an overnight rest rather than descending all the way to the park gate on the same day.

Trekking time: Approximately 10–15 hours or longer, depending on pace and conditions
Elevation: Kibo Hut, approximately 4,700 m; Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m; Horombo Hut, approximately 3,720 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, according to the operator's summit-day meal plan
Accommodation: Horombo Hut or designated overnight accommodation
